All About Gum Recession

There are a variety of ways your teeth can make you look older than you really are. Discolored teeth, misshapen teeth and missing teeth are just a few of them. Even wrinkles can be an indicator of teeth and/or bite issues.

But did you know your gums can also contribute to an older appearance? Gum recession does just that. What’s worse, not only is it one of the most common dental problems for people in the Phoenix Metropolitan area, most people don’t even know they have it.

Fortunately, Winterholler Dental Implants & Cosmetic Dentistry has you covered. Let’s talk about gun recession.

What is Gum Recession?

Your gums surround your teeth and give them a solid foundation. Most importantly, they cover the roots of your teeth. When you have gum recession, however, that tissue can wear away or “pull back,” causing more and more of your tooth to become exposed. If it becomes so severe that your roots are exposed, it can lead to the buildup of bacteria, development of cavities and even tooth loss. Gum recession is actually a significant cause for tooth loss in Scottsdale, Payson and the surrounding areas.

What Causes Gum Recession?

There are a variety of reasons people in Arizona develop gum recession:

  • One of the biggest is periodontal disease, a bacterial gum infection that destroys the supportive gum tissue holding your teeth in place.
  • Another reason could be insufficient or excessive dental care, whether it’s brushing and flossing too hard or not brushing and flossing enough.
  • Finally, it could just be a case of bad genes. As much as a third of the population is naturally susceptible to gum recession, regardless of how well they take care of their teeth.

What Are Treatment Options for Gum Recession?

There are both surgical and non-surgical options for treating gum recession. If it’s a mild case of gum recession, your dentist may simply recommend deep cleaning and improved dental hygiene practices. If there is excessive tooth damage or deep pockets have formed in your gums, surgery may be the only option.

What Are Prevention Methods for Gum Recession?

The best way to prevent gum recession is to visit your dentist regularly and follow proper dental hygiene habits. Brush and floss regularly and ask your dentist if there are any signs of an improper bite or teeth grinding. Also avoid smoking if possible.
